UpTrip loyalty guide · 2026
IHG One Rewards
IHG rewards progress between elite tiers. The best benefits still depend on the hotel.
At a glance
The short version.
IHG One Rewards tracks elite status and Milestone Rewards separately. IHG reported 7,014 hotels and more than one million rooms in its current corporate footprint, spanning mainstream, extended-stay, luxury, and resort brands.
Most hotels have a straightforward base earning rate, with important exceptions. Awards use dynamic pricing, part of every Points & Cash booking is nonrefundable, and the fourth-night benefit requires an eligible US credit card.
Strong points
- Broad portfolio across many trip types
- Milestone choices add value between status thresholds
- Strong upper-tier earning bonuses
- Eligible US cards can add a fourth-night award benefit
Watch for
- Dynamic award prices and property-level participation
- Reduced earning at extended-stay and Army Hotels
- Points & Cash includes a nonrefundable cash component
- Club-member inactivity window is only 12 months

Program overview
By the numbers.
Reviewed July 14, 2026 against the IHG One Rewards terms updated June 24, 2026, current benefits and customer-care pages. IHG reported 7,014 hotels at March 31, 2026. Six Senses, Iberostar, Ruby, InterContinental Alliance Resorts, residences and other special-property groups do not share one uniform participation model. IHG's current master terms and FAQ conflict on the earning rate for some residences; that conflict is preserved below rather than resolved by assumption.

Earning
The master terms and the FAQ disagree at the edges
IHG's June 24 master terms are the primary source, but a current official FAQ gives different treatment for some branded residences and Alliance properties. The property page and posted stay result should be used for those cases.
| Hotel or charge | Published earn | Status treatment | Source caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most participating IHG brands | 10 points per eligible US$1 | Eligible points can qualify status when classified as Elite Qualifying Points; one qualifying night per room/day | Eligible room rate and room-billed hotel charges; taxes, gratuities and many third-party charges are excluded |
| Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites | 5 points per eligible US$1 | Qualifying nights and eligible points can advance status | Do not apply the 10x headline rate to extended-stay bookings |
| Residences, serviced apartments and extended-stay units | Master terms say 5x; current FAQ says 2.5x at certain IHG-branded residences excluding voco Residences | Property-specific | Official-source conflict: verify the individual hotel page and retain the folio |
| IHG Army Hotels | 3 points per eligible US$1 | Qualifying treatment under Army Hotels rules | Reward Night availability can be limited or unavailable |
| InterContinental Alliance Resorts | Master terms require specified IHG booking channels; current FAQ lists fixed earning at certain Alliance properties | Property-specific | Do not infer the ordinary 10x rate; verify the named hotel before booking |
| Up to nine rooms | Eligible charges can earn points when the member stays and account/folio conditions are met | Only one room produces tier qualification for the member | All room reservations must be linked correctly; multiple occupants do not split the earn |
Members choose IHG points or participating airline/partner rewards for the same qualifying stay unless a promotion expressly allows both. Airline conversion is irreversible and can take up to six weeks.
Status
Nights or qualifying points, with breakfast at Diamond
| Tier | Qualification | Point bonus | Benefits to read precisely |
|---|---|---|---|
| Club | Enrollment | None | Member rates and late checkout up to 2 p.m. subject to availability; points expire after 12 inactive months |
| Silver Elite | 10 qualifying nights | +20% | Points do not expire while elite status is held; no points-based qualification route |
| Gold Elite | 20 qualifying nights or 40,000 Elite Qualifying Points | +40% | Rollover nights and eligible Hertz recognition; program-level late checkout remains subject to availability |
| Platinum Elite | 40 qualifying nights or 60,000 Elite Qualifying Points | +60% | Availability-based upgrade, restricted 72-hour room guarantee, reward-night discount access, welcome amenity and early check-in subject to availability |
| Diamond Elite | 70 qualifying nights or 120,000 Elite Qualifying Points | +100% | Diamond support and a welcome-amenity choice that can include daily hot breakfast for the member and one registered guest |
Elite bonus points do not automatically equal Elite Qualifying Points. Card, purchase, transfer, voucher and promotion treatment depends on the specific earning-source terms.
Redemption
Points & Cash is a point purchase wrapped around an award
| Redemption | How it is priced | Included and excluded | Failure mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reward Night | Dynamic point amount by hotel, brand, date and other factors | Standard room and government-mandated taxes/fees; food, gratuities, incidentals, extra guests and potentially property fees remain | No-blackout language does not create inventory after the hotel's reward allocation sells out |
| Points & Cash | Existing points plus an immediate purchase of the additional points required for a Reward Night | Reservation follows Reward Night treatment | On timely cancellation, purchased points return but the cash purchase is not refunded |
| Reward-night incidentals | No points on the redeemed room-rate equivalent | Eligible room-billed hotel charges can earn points or partner rewards | Charges not billed to the room and third-party services generally do not qualify |
| Secondary guest | Member can add another guest to check in where local law permits | Greater China requires Customer Care notice at least seven days before the stay | Incorrect guest details or local-law restrictions can prevent check-in |
| Fourth night free | Card-specific benefit for eligible US Chase IHG cardmembers | Not an IHG One Rewards base-program entitlement | Do not show it to every member or apply it outside the issuer terms |
Reward Nights count as qualifying nights. They do not earn points on the room-rate equivalent and do not carry the elite guaranteed-room-availability benefit.
Milestones
The important choices arrive at 20, 40 and 70 nights
Milestone Rewards use qualifying nights, including eligible Reward Nights. Rolled nights count toward status but not toward a new year's Milestones.
| Threshold | Available selection | Practical rule |
|---|---|---|
| 20 nights | 5,000 points, two US$20 Food & Beverage Rewards, or one Confirmable Suite Upgrade | A suite award can cover one room for an eligible stay of up to five nights |
| 30 nights | 5,000 points or two Food & Beverage Rewards | Choose within 90 days or risk forfeiture under current rules |
| 40 nights | Choose two: 10,000 points, five Food & Beverage Rewards, one Confirmable Suite Upgrade or Annual Lounge Membership | Suite and lounge selections are limited to one at this threshold |
| 50 and 60 nights | 10,000 points or five Food & Beverage Rewards at each threshold | Food & Beverage Rewards must be applied to eligible room-billed charges before checkout |
| 70 nights | Choose two: 10,000 points, five Food & Beverage Rewards, two Confirmable Suite Upgrades or Annual Lounge Membership | Selection limits apply; two suite awards are delivered through one suite choice |
| 80, 90 and 100 nights | 10,000 points or five Food & Beverage Rewards at each threshold | No additional published tier sits above Diamond in the core program |
| Confirmable Suite Upgrade | Request by phone no earlier than 14 days and no later than 24 hours before arrival; entry-level suite or premium-room alternative | Reward Nights qualify; excluded brands include avid, Atwell Suites, Army Hotels, Holiday Inn Club Vacations and Six Senses; a club-floor room does not include lounge access |
| Annual Lounge Membership | Member plus one guest during an eligible stay for the rest of the selection year plus 12 months | No maximum stay length, but participating-property and Alliance Resort exclusions apply |
How it works
Earning, status, and awards.
01 · Who it suits
IHG fits a wide range of trips.
IHG can cover a practical Holiday Inn Express stay, an extended-stay need, and an InterContinental or Six Senses trip inside one account. That breadth makes it useful when destinations and budgets vary.
Participation is not uniform across every newly integrated brand, resort, residence, or individual property. Search the exact hotel in IHG's official channel and read its earning and benefit presentation before assuming the portfolio-level rule applies.
02 · Earning
The brand changes the earning rate.
Most participating brands earn 10 base points per eligible US dollar. Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites earn 5, while IHG Army Hotels earns 3. Residence and serviced-apartment earning needs property-level confirmation: IHG's current master terms state 5, while its current FAQ lists 2.5 at certain IHG-branded residences other than voco Residences. Elite bonuses run from 20% at Silver to 100% at Diamond.
Only eligible charges and rates count. The estimate excludes card multipliers, promotions, taxes, and ineligible incidentals, keeping the result to the published base rate.
03 · Using points
Treat Points & Cash as a purchase.
Reward Night prices are dynamic and can begin at a low published floor, but live property and date pricing controls. No-blackout language does not create unlimited award inventory; a hotel may have no qualifying reward room left for your dates, and resort or service fees can remain.
Points & Cash is partly an immediate purchase of points. When an eligible reservation is canceled, the points are generally returned but the cash portion is nonrefundable. Enter that cash as a real cost. The fourth-night-free feature must remain off unless you confirm an eligible US IHG Chase card and the current card terms.
04 · Status and milestones
Milestones reward the nights between tiers.
Platinum and Diamond carry the strongest published on-property benefits. Milestone Rewards offer choices at specified qualifying-night intervals. A member can reach a milestone without changing tier, and earning a tier does not retroactively grant every milestone choice.
Silver has only a 10-night path. Gold, Platinum, and Diamond also have elite-qualifying-point paths. Track points and nights independently; promotional and bonus points are not automatically elite-qualifying points.
05 · Keeping points active
Club points expire after 12 inactive months.
Club-level points expire after 12 months without an earn or redeem action under current rules. Points do not expire while qualifying elite status is maintained. Treat the posted date of a named qualifying transaction as the evidence, not a login or profile edit.
Standard member-to-member transfers cost US$5 per 1,000 points and are nonrefundable. That is often an expensive way to solve a small gap, so compare the transfer cost with buying the room, buying points under an official offer, or selecting a different redemption.
06 · Our take
Milestone Rewards add value between tiers.
IHG's broad portfolio is useful on its own. Milestone Rewards add value before the next elite tier, a real advantage for frequent guests. Platinum and Diamond can improve a stay, but delivery still depends on the brand and hotel.
Use the 10× rate only at an eligible brand, count Points & Cash as partly a purchase, and apply the fourth-night feature only with the right card. Infrequent guests should watch the short Club expiry window closely.
Playbook
Earning and redemption, in practice.
Qualification, booking, and redemption call for different decisions. Here is how to handle each one.
Start here
IHG is broad, practical and unusually dependent on the exact brand
IHG's network covers luxury resorts, city hotels, roadside properties and extended stays. That range makes the program useful across ordinary travel rather than only aspirational trips. It also means the 10-points-per-dollar headline and Diamond benefit list cannot be applied uniformly.
Start by identifying the property's participation class. A Holiday Inn Express, InterContinental, Staybridge Suites, Six Senses, Iberostar, Ruby hotel and Alliance Resort can differ in earning, awards, breakfast and elite treatment. The individual hotel page and current terms should agree before the guide makes a firm promise.
- Verify participating property, brand and booking channel together.
- Treat Six Senses, Iberostar, Ruby and Alliance properties as special cases.
- Use the newer master terms when general pages conflict, while disclosing the conflict.
Earning
Separate redeemable points from status-qualifying points
A qualifying stay at most brands earns 10 points per eligible dollar, while extended-stay and special properties earn less. Elite bonuses add 20%, 40%, 60% or 100% to the base. Taxes, service charges, gratuities and third-party items should be removed before estimating the result.
Not every point advances status. IHG identifies Elite Qualifying Points according to the source, and transfers, purchases, many card earnings and promotions may be redeemable without satisfying the status meter. When a stay could qualify Gold, Platinum or Diamond on points, use the account's qualifying-point total rather than the visible balance.
- Calculate base points at the property's actual rate.
- Apply the elite percentage to base points, not total spend.
- Label every non-stay earning source qualifying or nonqualifying from its terms.
Status
Platinum upgrades are useful; Diamond breakfast is clearer
Platinum introduces availability-based upgrades, early check-in, reward discounts and a 72-hour room guarantee with restrictions. The upgrade is to the next best room the hotel makes available; it is not a confirmed suite. Program-wide late checkout remains subject to availability even at higher tiers.
Diamond's most legible benefit is the welcome-amenity choice that can include daily hot breakfast for the member and one registered guest. It still follows participating-brand and property rules and is a choice, not necessarily an additional meal layered on top of every existing offer. Confirm the registered guest and selection at check-in.
- Do not promise a Platinum or Diamond suite at arrival.
- Ask how the Diamond breakfast choice is delivered at that hotel.
- Treat early check-in and late checkout as requests unless terms say otherwise.
Milestones
Milestones can outweigh the tier itself
At 20 nights, a Confirmable Suite Upgrade can be more useful than 5,000 points. At 40 and 70 nights, suite awards or Annual Lounge Membership can transform several stays. These rewards come from qualifying nights, not the Elite Qualifying Point route, so a high-spend member can earn Platinum or Diamond without receiving the same Milestone package.
Each choice has timing. Members have 90 days to select, and the reward then follows its own validity. A suite upgrade must be requested by phone 14 days to 24 hours before arrival and covers up to five nights. Lounge Membership lasts through the selection year plus 12 months and covers the member and one guest at participating lounges.
- Model status and Milestone progress separately.
- Choose suite or lounge only with eligible stays in view.
- Calendar the selection deadline and reward expiry immediately.
Awards
Points & Cash is irreversible cash converted to points
IHG's Points & Cash booking is not a hotel bill split between currencies. The member uses existing points and buys the remaining points needed for a Reward Night. If the booking is canceled within policy, those purchased points return to the account; the cash does not return to the card.
That structure changes the risk. The booking may be cancelable, but the point purchase is not. Compare the offer with buying points independently, using an all-points award or paying the hotel rate. Do not select Points & Cash simply because it displays a lower immediate cash amount.
- Treat the cash component as a nonrefundable point purchase.
- Confirm reward inventory before committing.
- Value the returned points, not a cash refund, in cancellation planning.
Fees
Reward Night does not mean a zero-dollar checkout
A Reward Night covers a standard room and government-mandated taxes or fees under the master terms. Extra guests, children, food, gratuities and incidentals can remain. The terms do not create a universal resort- or destination-fee waiver, and all-inclusive occupancy and meal-plan rules vary.
Review the final award summary and property terms before moving points. At Iberostar and other special properties, local or conditional taxes may remain. If a fee is unclear, ask the hotel to identify whether it is government-mandated, a property charge or tied to occupancy; those categories receive different treatment.
- Include every mandatory cash charge in award value.
- Enter all guests and children accurately during search.
- Do not advertise a universal resort-fee waiver.
Cards
Fourth night free belongs to a card, not the program
Eligible US Chase IHG Premier and Business Premier cardmembers can receive a fourth-night benefit on qualifying award stays under the issuer terms. It is one of IHG's most valuable award mechanics for those cardholders. It does not attach to a Club, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond account by default.
A guide that displays the fourth night as a universal IHG feature overstates value for international members and US members without the card. Gate the calculator behind explicit card eligibility, link to the current issuer terms and show the ordinary award price beside the card-adjusted total.
- Ask whether the eligible primary card is active before applying the benefit.
- Keep card disclosures separate from organic status benefits.
- Do not describe a card offer as an IHG-wide promotion.
Eligibility
Approved channels protect the complete benefit set
IHG recognizes its own websites, app, WeChat, Customer Care, hotels, eligible Iberostar channels and authorized travel agents with direct distribution agreements. Most ordinary OTAs, wholesalers, tour operators and crew rates do not qualify. An enrolling stay booked through an OTA can receive limited treatment without turning later OTA stays into qualifying reservations.
The cost of an ineligible booking can include points, qualifying nights, breakfast, upgrades and Milestone progress. Group attendees can still receive on-property tier benefits, but earning on a group rate generally requires individual payment rather than a master folio. Check both rate and channel before assigning value.
- Do not generalize the enrolling-stay exception.
- Confirm whether an agent is IHG-authorized, not merely IATA-affiliated.
- Retain the reservation and folio until activity posts.
Account care
A cheap activity is better than an expensive transfer
Club-member points expire after 12 months without a posted earn or redeem transaction. Elite-member points remain active while elite status is held. An annual co-branded-card Free Night does not count as activity for this purpose, so a member can use a certificate while an unrelated point balance approaches forfeiture.
Member transfers cost US$5 per 1,000 points, or half a cent per point before the recipient redeems anything. That fee can erase the value of many awards. Prefer a small qualifying earn or redemption for account care, and transfer only when a specific, available award produces more value than the fee and alternatives.
- Post qualifying activity before the 12-month deadline.
- Do not use a card certificate as an expiry reset.
- Compare transfer fee, point purchase and cash room before moving points.

Current master terms update
The terms used for this guide carry this update date and govern current participation, qualification, earning, redemptions, transfers and expiry. Some current FAQ language still conflicts with the master terms on residence earning.
Ruby Hotels integration began rolling out
IHG states that Ruby hotels are being continuously integrated into IHG One Rewards from January 2026. Participation must be checked on the individual hotel website rather than assumed across the brand.
IHG reached 7,014 open hotels
The first-quarter trading update reported 1.036 million rooms and 7,014 hotels. These corporate totals are broader than a claim that every hotel offers identical IHG One Rewards terms.

Questions
What travelers ask.
Answers reflect the sources and review date above. Promotions, participation, and hotel delivery can change.
01How many IHG One Rewards points do I earn at a hotel?
Most participating brands earn 10 points per eligible US dollar. Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites generally earn 5x; Army Hotels earns 3x. The current master terms say 5x for residences/serviced apartments, while an official FAQ says 2.5x at certain branded residences. Verify the individual property when those sources conflict.
02Do all IHG points count toward elite status?
No. Only points classified as Elite Qualifying Points advance the Gold, Platinum and Diamond point thresholds. Many card, purchase, transfer, voucher, promotional and bonus points are redeemable without being status-qualifying. Read the earning source's terms.
03Do IHG Reward Nights count toward status and Milestones?
Eligible Reward Nights count as qualifying nights and can advance night-based status and Milestone Rewards. They do not earn points on the redeemed room-rate equivalent, although eligible incidentals can earn.
04How do IHG rollover nights work?
Gold, Platinum and Diamond can roll qualifying nights beyond the threshold for the tier earned into the next calendar year's status calculation. Previously rolled nights cannot roll again, and rollover nights do not count toward Milestone Rewards.
05Does IHG Diamond include breakfast?
Diamond's welcome-amenity choice can include daily hot breakfast for the member and one registered guest at participating hotels. It is a choice subject to brand and property rules, not an unconditional breakfast added to every stay.
06Does IHG Platinum or Diamond guarantee a suite?
No. Ordinary elite upgrades are subject to availability and may be the next best room rather than a suite. A separate Confirmable Suite Upgrade earned through Milestones can confirm an entry-level suite, subject to hotel inventory, timing and a long exclusion list.
07How does an IHG Confirmable Suite Upgrade work?
Call Customer Care between 14 days and 24 hours before arrival. When eligible inventory exists, the award confirms an entry-level suite for one room and a stay of up to five nights; a premium room may be offered if no suite is available. Reward Nights qualify, but several brands and property types do not.
08What does IHG Annual Lounge Membership include?
It covers the member and one guest at participating lounges during eligible stays for the rest of the selection year plus 12 months. There is no program-level stay-length cap, but property exclusions apply, including InterContinental Alliance Resorts under current rules.
09Is IHG Points & Cash refundable?
The reservation can follow its cancellation policy, but the cash component is an immediate, nonrefundable point purchase. A timely cancellation returns the purchased points to the account rather than refunding that cash to the payment method.
10Are resort fees waived on IHG Reward Nights?
IHG's master terms cover the standard room and government-mandated taxes or fees, but they do not promise a universal resort- or destination-fee waiver. Property charges, extra guests, food, gratuities and incidentals can remain. Check the final award summary.
11Does every IHG member receive a fourth award night free?
No. Redeem three nights and get the fourth free is a benefit of eligible US Chase IHG credit cards under separate issuer terms. It is not an automatic Club or elite-status benefit and should not be applied to members without an eligible card.
12When do IHG points expire, and can I transfer them?
Club-member points expire after 12 months without a posted earn or redeem transaction. Elite-member points do not expire while elite status is maintained. Transfers cost US$5 per 1,000 points, are nonrefundable and are usually worth considering only for a specific available award.
