GHA DISCOVERY

GHA turns a diverse group of independent brands into one spendable reward. Direct booking matters.

At a glance

The short version.

GHA DISCOVERY connects 55 independent hotel brands across about 1,000 hotels in 100 countries. Members earn DISCOVERY Dollars, or D$. Each D$1 removes US$1 from an eligible transaction, although D$ remain program rewards and are not cash.

Booking channel matters. Eligible direct bookings earn the full rate; GHA says a non-direct booking may earn up to 100% fewer D$. The rate you book can affect your return as much as your tier.

Strong points

  • Cash-like D$ relationship for eligible hotel spend
  • Access to diverse independent and luxury brands
  • Multiple status routes including number of brands used
  • Tier earn rate is easy to express as a percentage

Watch for

  • Full earning depends on eligible direct booking
  • D$ buckets have tier-dependent 12–24 month expiry
  • Eligible charges and cancellation treatment are tightly defined
  • Many top-tier benefits vary by brand and hotel

Program overview

By the numbers.

GHA DISCOVERY is a shared loyalty program for participating hotels in Global Hotel Alliance. It spans independent hotel groups rather than a single standardized chain, so brand and property participation matter at every step. Current consumer pages describe 55 brands and roughly 1,000 hotels in 100 countries; an older GHA corporate page still says 50 brands. This guide uses the current consumer figure and dates that choice to July 14, 2026.

Participation

A green check marks a participating brand. A dot means participation or benefits vary by property, region, collection, or stay type.

Before you book

The current FAQ and terms enumerate 58 names while marketing copy still says 55. NH Hotels, NH Collection, and nhow count as one member brand for tier calculations. Always confirm the individual property and eligible rate.

Earning and qualification

Four tiers, with three ways to qualify

GHA measures qualification in a calendar year. A member needs to satisfy only one route shown for a tier; nights, brand-diverse stays, and Net Eligible Spend are alternatives rather than cumulative requirements.

TierEarn on Net Eligible SpendQualificationD$ validity
Silver4%Granted when the member joins12 months from issue
Gold5%2 eligible stays or US$1,000 eligible spend18 months from issue
Platinum6%10 nights, 2 stays at different brands, or US$5,000 eligible spend24 months from issue
Titanium7%30 nights, 3 stays at different brands, or US$15,000 eligible spend24 months from issue

Status lasts for the remainder of the qualification year and the following calendar year. A member who does not requalify in that following year normally drops one tier.

Elite benefits

What Platinum and Titanium actually provide

Most stay benefits are subject to availability and local participation. The table separates the published promise from the conditions that determine whether it is useful on a particular trip.

Titanium breakfast is the participating hotel's offered breakfast for the member and one registered guest in the same room. Room service and lounge access are not included unless the booked room includes them.

Earning rules

What reaches the D$ calculation

The headline percentage applies to Net Eligible Spend, not necessarily the full folio. A high bill can produce a modest D$ return if much of it consists of taxes, tips, third-party charges, or excluded services.

Charge or bookingTypical treatmentWhat to check
Eligible room rateEarns D$ and tier creditBook through GHA, the brand, or a participating hotel on an eligible rate
Hotel food and beverageMay earn when participating and properly postedCharge to the room and confirm the outlet is operated by the hotel
Spa, golf, sport, hotel experiencesMay earn when the hotel creates and bills the serviceThird-party operators and City Unscripted experiences are excluded
Taxes, fees, gratuitiesExcludedRemove them before forecasting D$
Retail, gift cards, banquets, cateringExcludedA hotel-branded sale is not automatically Net Eligible Spend
OTA or otherwise ineligible rateCan earn no D$ or creditNon-direct bookings may receive up to 100% fewer D$ at GHA's discretion
Multiple roomsUp to two may qualifyThe member must stay in one and satisfy the payment and booking requirements
Simultaneous hotelsNo duplicate stay creditDo not plan status around overlapping stays in different locations

Whole D$ are rounded down. When an eligible stay calculates above zero but below D$5, the published minimum award is D$5.

Using D$

Redemption, cancellation, and transfer rules

D$ are easier to understand than most hotel currencies, but the operational rules still matter. The largest avoidable losses come from expiration, ineligible bookings, no-shows, and cancelling through the wrong channel.

ActionPublished ruleConsequence
Redeem at a hotelMinimum D$10; then D$1 incrementsEligible folio items and local treatment determine the usable amount
Redeem during bookingAvailable on the GHA site or app where supportedThe member must stay; Plum Guide online redemption is excluded
Modify an online D$ bookingModification is not supportedCancel under the stated policy and make a new booking
CancelUse the prescribed GHA channel and meet the hotel's deadlineD$ that expired between booking and cancellation are not restored
No-showD$ can be forfeitedTreat the points component with the same care as a prepaid cash amount
Transfer to another memberApp only; D$100–D$500; two sent and two received dailySender must be a member for 90 days; transfer is irreversible
Transfer and expiryOldest eligible D$ move firstThe original expiry date remains; transfer is not an extension strategy

The system applies the D$ expiring soonest first. A later tier upgrade does not reset the validity of D$ already in the account.

How it works

Earning, status, and awards.

01 · Who it suits

Choose GHA for the hotels.

GHA gives otherwise separate hotel brands a shared way to award recognition and rewards. Members gain access to independent-style and luxury properties, while delivery continues to vary by brand, hotel, rate, and available facilities.

Check that the exact hotel participates and that the direct channel and rate are eligible. If an OTA rate is meaningfully cheaper, compare the saved cash with the D$ and recognition you may forgo rather than treating direct booking as automatically superior.

02 · Earning

Your tier sets a simple earning rate.

Silver earns 4% of net eligible spend in D$, Gold 5%, Platinum 6%, and Titanium 7%. GHA rounds the raw award down to a whole D$; when a positive calculation is below D$5, the award becomes D$5. Taxes, tips, fees, ineligible outlets, and other exclusions do not enter net eligible spend.

Full earning requires an eligible direct booking. GHA determines earnings for non-direct bookings and can reduce them by up to 100%. Use the rate that posts to your account; the base estimate assumes eligible direct spend.

03 · Using D$

Use expiring D$ first.

Redemption begins at D$10 and then uses whole D$1 increments. Eligible uses can include room charges, upgrades, selected dining, spa, golf, and GHA Experiences. Taxes, tips, fees, certain retail or third-party outlets, and ineligible rates or services can remain outside redemption.

The nearest-expiring D$ are used first. Online D$ bookings generally require cancel-and-rebook rather than modification. If expired D$ were used and a booking is later canceled, those expired rewards can be forfeited; valid D$ return only within the applicable refundable and channel rules.

04 · Status

Staying across brands can earn status.

Gold uses stays or spend. Platinum and Titanium add nights, spend, and number-of-brands routes. The alternatives are valuable for travelers who move among alliance brands, but each path must independently meet its threshold.

Platinum and Titanium list upgrades, arrival/departure flexibility, amenities, guarantees, breakfast, and other recognition. Availability, participating-brand lists, hotel exclusions, eligible rates, and notice requirements apply. Titanium breakfast is not a universal promise at every alliance hotel.

05 · Keeping D$ active

Every D$ bucket has its own expiry.

D$ issued while a member is Silver expire after 12 months, those issued at Gold after 18, and those issued at Platinum or Titanium after 24. A later status change does not redate an existing bucket. Status remains for the qualifying year and following calendar year, but status duration and individual D$ expiry are different clocks.

Foreign-exchange handling can differ from the hotel's folio rate because GHA selects the conversion rate used for program calculations. Preserve the posted D$ record, monitor first-expiring rewards, and confirm cancellation consequences before using a bucket near expiry.

06 · Our take

D$ make an alliance easier to use.

D$ give GHA DISCOVERY an unusually clear reward: one eligible D$ removes one US dollar from eligible charges. The work lies in confirming hotel participation, direct-booking eligibility, brand benefits, and the expiry date of each reward.

GHA can be a primary or secondary program for travelers who already like its brands. Compare the direct rate before paying more to earn D$, value only the benefits that hotel can deliver, and use each balance before its own deadline.

Playbook

Earning and redemption, in practice.

Qualification, booking, and redemption call for different decisions. Here is how to handle each one.

01

01 · Before booking

Start with the property, not the alliance number

GHA DISCOVERY joins many independently operated hotel groups under one loyalty framework. That breadth is useful, but it does not make every hotel interchangeable. The participating directory, the property's own booking page, and the current benefit language are more important than the headline portfolio count when deciding whether a stay will earn and what recognition to expect.

Open the hotel through a GHA or official brand channel and inspect the rate before paying. Confirm that the hotel participates, that the rate is eligible, and that the member number is attached. If breakfast or a late departure would change the value of the stay, ask the hotel to confirm the applicable benefit rather than inferring it from the brand name alone.

  • Use the live GHA directory for participation.
  • Save the eligible-rate description and cancellation terms.
  • Attach the member number before arrival.
  • Confirm property-specific Titanium benefits in writing when they materially affect the choice.
02

02 · Earning

Read the percentage against the right number

A Titanium member earns 7%, but that is 7% of Net Eligible Spend. Taxes, fees, tips, retail, gift cards, banquets, catering, and many third-party charges sit outside the calculation. A room-only stay is easy to estimate; a resort folio with large service charges, outside operators, and incidental spending needs a line-by-line view.

For a useful forecast, begin with the eligible room rate and add only services the participating hotel operates and bills as eligible. Remove taxes and compulsory or discretionary charges. GHA converts local spending and rounds the result down to a whole D$, although an otherwise eligible stay producing less than D$5 receives the published D$5 minimum.

  • Forecast from pre-tax eligible spend, not the checkout total.
  • Charge eligible hotel outlets to the room when the rules allow.
  • Do not count City Unscripted or an outside spa operator without confirmation.
  • Review the posted D$ while the folio is still easy to retrieve.
03

03 · Status

Brand diversity can do more work than nights

The distinctive feature of GHA status is its alternative brand route. Two eligible stays at different brands can produce Platinum; three at different brands can produce Titanium. For a traveler already moving among participating cities, that can be far less demanding than ten or thirty nights. The stays still need to be eligible, completed, and credited correctly.

Do not manufacture an itinerary solely for a label. Price the incremental cost of using a second or third GHA brand and compare it with benefits on trips already planned. Titanium can be compelling where breakfast, flexible timing, and stronger upgrade priority apply, but those benefits remain dependent on the participating brand and property.

  • Map upcoming stays by participating brand before choosing a qualification route.
  • Do not count two hotels from the same brand as brand diversity.
  • Avoid overlapping stays; simultaneous hotels do not create duplicate credit.
  • Keep invoices until the status counter updates.
04

04 · Redemption

Use D$ as expiring hotel cash

D$ have a transparent nominal value, which removes the hunt for a secret award chart. The decision is principally whether the booking and folio are eligible and whether the balance will remain valid. Silver D$ can expire after twelve months; even Titanium D$ carry a two-year life. Existing D$ keep their original date after a tier change or transfer.

A sensible routine is to review the balance before every eligible trip and apply the oldest D$ to a stay the member would otherwise pay for. There is little reason to preserve an expiring balance for a grand redemption when the currency's nominal value is fixed. Keep enough cash flexibility for charges D$ cannot cover.

  • Sort the account by expiry before booking.
  • Redeem at least D$10, then use D$1 increments as needed.
  • Do not transfer D$ to extend them; the date follows the currency.
  • Leave room for taxes, fees, and other excluded charges.
05

05 · Reservation control

An online D$ booking is cancel-and-rebook

Where GHA supports D$ during online booking, the payment experience is convenient but the reservation cannot simply be edited later. A date, room, or guest change generally requires cancellation under the hotel's rules and a fresh booking. Availability and price can change in the interval, so the apparent convenience comes with less modification flexibility.

Cancellation also has currency consequences. D$ that pass their expiry date between booking and cancellation are not returned, and a no-show can cost the points component. Cancel through the prescribed GHA channel, retain the confirmation, and verify that refundable D$ reappear before assuming the matter is closed.

  • Choose flexible dates before committing D$ online.
  • Read the hotel's cancellation deadline, including local time.
  • Cancel through the channel required by GHA.
  • Keep screenshots of the D$ amount and post-cancellation balance.
06

06 · Titanium

Breakfast is valuable only where it participates

Titanium breakfast applies at participating brands for the member and one guest registered in the same room. It is not a universal GHA entitlement. The hotel supplies its normal included breakfast, and the benefit does not automatically provide room service or lounge entry. It is also limited to the first thirty days of a long stay.

The roster changed several times in 2026, with Anantara, TemptingPlaces, Tivoli, Almanac, and STORY joining on different dates. That is a reason to maintain a dated brand checker, not to freeze a list in prose. Before valuing status, confirm the brand, property, direct-booking requirement, registered guest, and meal format.

  • Check the live participating-brand list for the stay date.
  • Book direct and register the second guest.
  • Ask what breakfast format the property provides.
  • For stays over thirty days, price meals after the benefit ends.
07

07 · Arrival

Ask for the benefit without building the trip around it

Platinum and Titanium upgrades, early check-in, and late checkout are inventory benefits. They improve the member's position but do not convert an unavailable room into a guarantee. Book the lowest room category and schedule that remain acceptable if the hotel cannot honor the request.

Titanium's 48-hour availability feature is narrower than its name suggests. It requires an eligible direct request and has high-demand, resort, and other exceptions. It does not promise the preferred room category or a favorable rate. Use it when access matters more than price, then ask the hotel to state the available room and terms before confirming.

  • Request 11 a.m. check-in two days before arrival.
  • Repeat upgrade and checkout requests at check-in.
  • Keep the base booking workable without elite fulfillment.
  • For the 48-hour feature, obtain the actual rate and room type before committing.
08

08 · Household strategy

Transfer only when the receiving stay is ready

GHA permits app-based transfers of D$100 to D$500 after the sender has held an account for at least ninety days. The daily limits are two transfers sent and two received. There is no fee, but the action is irreversible and the system moves the oldest eligible D$ first.

Because the original expiry date remains, a transfer is useful for consolidating a near-term eligible payment, not for warehousing value. Confirm the recipient's reservation, participating property, and redemption channel before moving the currency. Leave enough time to resolve an account or app issue without pushing the D$ past expiry.

  • Verify both member numbers before sending.
  • Check the exact expiry of the D$ that will move.
  • Stay within the D$100–D$500 transfer range and daily limits.
  • Transfer only for a planned use because the action cannot be reversed.
09

09 · After the stay

Close the loop while the evidence is fresh

A shared alliance program has more handoffs than a single-chain system: the property closes the folio, the brand reports the stay, and GHA applies eligibility and status logic. Errors are easier to correct when the member still has the reservation, folio, rate terms, and any property correspondence in one place.

Compare the credited stay, brand, nights, Net Eligible Spend, tier percentage, and D$ expiry with the expected result. A round-number comparison against the full folio is not enough because excluded charges distort it. If the credit is missing or materially wrong, use GHA support and provide the documents rather than relying on a verbal explanation from the front desk.

  • Retain the itemized folio and booking confirmation.
  • Check the brand-diversity counter as well as nights and spend.
  • Confirm the issue and expiry dates of the new D$.
  • Raise discrepancies before the trip record becomes difficult to reconstruct.

Change log

What changed.

  1. Titanium breakfast participation expanded

GHA added Anantara on January 7, TemptingPlaces on January 13, Tivoli on March 1, Almanac on May 4, and STORY on June 8. Participation remains brand-specific and should be checked for the stay date.

  2. Four brands and 22 properties announced

GHA announced Almanac, Regal, STORY, and TemptingPlaces as new member brands. Current consumer pages now describe 55 brands and about 1,000 hotels, while an older About page still reports 50 brands.

  3. One-time D$ expiry relief

D$ otherwise scheduled to expire from February 28 through September 30, 2026 were extended to September 30, 2026 because of Middle East disruption. This is temporary relief, not an evergreen expiry rule.

  4. Dated app-booking bonus

Eligible app stays can receive a promotional D$5 bonus during the published offer period. Keep the offer separate from base earning because its dates and eligibility can change.

Questions

What travelers ask.

Answers reflect the sources and review date above. Promotions, participation, and hotel delivery can change.

01What is one DISCOVERY Dollar worth?

D$1 is nominally equivalent to US$1. At a hotel using another currency, GHA converts the value using an exchange rate it selects. The practical questions are whether the booking and charge are eligible and whether the D$ remain valid, not whether a hidden award chart produces a different nominal value.

02How are DISCOVERY Dollars earned?

Members earn 4% at Silver, 5% at Gold, 6% at Platinum, and 7% at Titanium on Net Eligible Spend. GHA rounds to whole D$. Taxes, fees, gratuities, retail, gift cards, banquets, catering, many third-party charges, and ineligible rates are excluded. An eligible calculation above zero but below D$5 receives the published D$5 minimum.

03What is the quickest way to earn Platinum or Titanium?

Platinum can be earned with two eligible stays at different GHA brands; Titanium can be earned with three. The alternatives are ten nights or US$5,000 for Platinum and thirty nights or US$15,000 for Titanium. Only completed eligible activity in the calendar year counts.

04Does an OTA booking earn D$ or status credit?

Do not rely on it. GHA's terms allow non-direct bookings to earn up to 100% fewer D$ at its discretion, and explicitly ineligible rates receive no D$, tier credit, or normal benefits. Book through GHA, the participating brand, or the hotel on an eligible rate when program credit matters.

05Does every Titanium member receive free breakfast?

No. Breakfast is offered only at participating brands, on a qualifying direct stay, for the member and one registered guest in the same room. It uses the hotel's offered breakfast format, does not automatically include room service or lounge access, and is limited to the first thirty days of a stay.

06Can D$ pay taxes, fees, and every room charge?

No. Redemption applies only to eligible charges under the program and local property process. Taxes, gratuities, service charges, third-party items, and other exclusions may remain payable in cash or by card. Review the expected folio before deciding how many D$ to apply.

07Can an online D$ reservation be changed?

GHA states that an online D$ reservation cannot be modified. The member must cancel within the applicable policy and make a new booking. A different price or room may be available when rebooking, and D$ that expired after the original booking may not be restored on cancellation.

08Does transferring D$ extend their expiry?

No. The original expiry date follows the transferred D$. Transfers are app-only, irreversible, and normally limited to D$100–D$500, with two sent and two received per day. The sender must have held a membership for at least ninety days.

09What does Titanium's 48-hour room guarantee guarantee?

It can provide access to an available room under the program's direct-booking and request conditions, but it does not guarantee a preferred room category or rate. Resort restrictions, extraordinary-demand periods, and other exceptions apply. Ask the property for the exact room and price before accepting.

10Can a member earn on more than one room?

A member can generally earn on up to two eligible rooms when occupying one and satisfying the booking and payment rules. Overlapping stays at different hotels do not create duplicate eligible stays. Confirm how the second room is attached before checkout.

11How long does GHA status last?

Status earned in a calendar year continues for the rest of that year and the following calendar year. If the member fails to requalify in the following year, the usual treatment is a one-tier drop. Individual D$ keep their own issue-based expiry dates regardless of a later tier change.

12Does GHA DISCOVERY status-match other hotel programs?

The current terms state that status is not awarded based on status held in a non-GHA program. Use the published stay, night, brand-diversity, or eligible-spend qualification routes unless GHA publishes a separate dated offer.
